How to Clean The Toilet Rim

When cleaning the toilet rim, it’s easy to miss the toilet rim when it sits hidden underneath the seat – but that doesn’t mean that you should neglect this area.

The toilet rim has a more important function than you may think – it also holds the toilet rim jets, which while tucked away, are where water from the flush tank comes through. If you’ve ever wondered where the stream of water flowing down into the bowl is coming from, now you know!

Start by wiping the surface of the rim with a Lysol® Disinfecting Wipe and then follow the instructions below to stop the underneath of your toilet rim and toilet jets from building up with bacteria...

How to clean under a toilet rim

When you’re cleaning the toilet bowl, it’s crucial that you also clean under the rim. To do this, you can use Lysol® Power Toilet Bowl Cleaner, which both cleans and disinfects your entire toilet and is especially angled to hit your toughest stains directly under the rim. To sanitize and disinfect, follow the steps below:

  1. Flush toilet before cleaning.
  2. Apply 4 oz. to coat the bowl including under the rim and do not close the lid.
  3. Let stand for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Scrub the entire bowl and under the rim thoroughly.
  5. Flush and then rinse your brush in fresh water.
  6. Repeat if necessary.

How to remove limescale from toilet rim

In order to clean limescale from the toilet rim and toilet rim jets, you’ll need to make sure that they are not emitting any water. To do this, find the small shutoff valve at the base of the toilet and rotate clockwise to stop any water coming through. Next, flush the toilet to drain.

To clean limescale from the toilet rim and toilet rim jets, you’ll need to use something specifically made for lime and rust removal. To do so, you can use Lysol® Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Lime & Rust Remover using the steps below:

  1. Flush first to remove excess dirt and grime before cleaning and disinfecting.
  2. Pour directly on the stain under the rim and do not close the toilet lid.
  3. Let it soak for 10 minutes and then scrub the bowl thoroughly with the toilet brush (or toothbrush for smaller areas).
  4. Turn the valve back on.
  5. Flush and rinse toilet brush in fresh water after use.

How to clean toilet rim holes

Sometimes the rim jets on your toilet can get clogged due to mineral deposits such as lime and calcium. You may notice that the toilet is not flushing completely, or that it takes longer.

You can check your toilet jets by holding a mirror underneath, and if you see white, orange or black marks it is likely that you need to descale the toilet rim. If this area needs attention, follow the same instructions you would for removing limescale from the toilet rim.

Cleaning your toilet rim should be a part of your regular toilet bowl cleaning, but because of where it sits, it can often get missed. Make sure you target your Lysol® toilet bowl cleaner under the rim and check regularly for signs of build-up that can lead to your jets getting blocked.
